Reading the calendar
Start with Today to return to the current month. Choose Gregorian or Hijri to set the main calendar, then enable the dual-date display to see the corresponding date in each cell. Changing the main calendar changes month navigation; it does not move an appointment to a different day.
When planning across a month boundary, check the selected day's full date rather than assuming the two calendars start a month together. A Gregorian month can contain portions of two Hijri months.
Why Hijri months move through the seasons
The Islamic calendar follows lunar months, while the Gregorian calendar follows the solar year. Twelve lunar months are shorter than a solar year, so a Hijri occasion falls earlier in successive Gregorian years. A calendar conversion is therefore more reliable than subtracting a fixed number from the year.
Calculation method and local adjustment
Our conversion library uses Umm al-Qura date tables within its supported table range of 1356–1500 AH, with a separate calculated method outside that range. A calculated civil calendar is not a record of every community's actual moon sightings.
If your community's announced date differs, use the Hijri adjustment control and compare a known current date. For example, if the app shows the 10th and the announcement says the 11th for the same civil day, check the result after applying a one-day adjustment. An adjustment should reflect the convention you follow, not be used to force unrelated historical dates to match.
A practical planning checklist
- Select the day and read the full Gregorian and Hijri dates.
- Check whether a manual Hijri adjustment is active.
- Write the calendar name and month name when sharing the date.
- Recheck community announcements before a religious observance.
When another calendar disagrees
Compare the method, adjustment and location/date settings before concluding that either result is wrong. For historical documents, calendar conventions and regional adoption of civil calendars add further uncertainty. Use the date converter guide before comparing a historical record with a modern civil date.
